As you enter into the collegiate sports world it’s going to be vital that your take OWNERSHIP of your experience! Your POWER lies in your PREPARATION and how you use your VOICE! Honestly, you can’t afford to continue to play the short game you must learn how to play the long game! This simply means that you understand that the decisions you make today can truly set you up for the things you want in the future! You have to make the decision that you will no longer sit on the sidelines of your experience and let life just happen to you. If you fail to plan you plan to fail so it’s vital have a general idea of what you want out of life. When you have a target you naturally start looking for opportunities and put yourself in situations that will generate that desired result.

STEP 1: You must visualize and define your DREAM!

PRAYER is the FIRST STEP! GOD grants VISION and CLARITY so you’ll want to talk to him first!

Ask GOD the following questions:

- What is your will for my life?

- What do you want me to focus on?

- What do I need to develop and work on physically?

- What areas of my personality and character do you want me to work on?

Guiding Scripture: Psalms 37:3-7 (NLT) says, “Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.”

STEP 2: You must create a BLUEPRINT!

PREPARATION is required so that you can make sure you choose the right institution and program to partner with. I want this experience to be a partnership not a transaction for you! The goal is to extract the most VALUE from your collegiate journey. Please understand that you don’t have to know all the details. The details will come to you as you continue to live and get exposed to different experiences! Having a plan or at least some tentative bullet points available to you will help you make decisions that’ll position you for the life that you want. This plan can change and shift at any moment. In fact you’ll have to make pivots and u-turns throughout your journey so don’t feel like you have to know everything right now. Think of it like this, your plan or your bullet points are just an outline for how you see your life. Being an active participant in your life will grant you access to the experiences that will clarify the details in your plan.

ACTION ITEMS: Take a moment to ask yourself, “What do I truly want out of life?” It’s ok if you don’t know that answer to the question. If that’s the case make general statements about what you don’t want your life to look like. Doing this will help you gain an understanding of what you’ll need to avoid in order to navigate throughout your journey.

Ask the following questions:

- What do I want out of life? Where do I see myself in the future?

- Statement: I don’t want my life to look like…….. (Insert statement)

- What type of support do I need?

STEP 3: You must create a MUST HAVE Wishlist!

ACTION ITEMS: Create bullet points based on the CAMPUS ATMOSPHERE and PROGRAM ATMOSPHERE you require in order to fulfill your needs. Create your “MUST HAVE WISH LIST” for the next level!

Ask the following questions:

- Do you want to stay close to home?

- Do you want to attend an HBCU (Historically Black College and University) or a PWI (Predominately White Institution)?

- What do you plan to study?
